NB Candidate Support Workshops

In collaboration with National Board District Liaison's, the Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention, and Advancement conducts informational workshops aimed to assist and guide National Board Candidates through the process of completing and submitting all portfolio entries and to help prepare candidates for the assessment center.

As workshops are scheduled throughout the year information will be posted on this page. For more information contact your local district's National Board Liaison.
 

 

PSTA Sponsored Trainings

Once again, PSTA will offer professional development workshops for National Board Certification candidates across the Palmetto State. These workshops are designed to support first-time candidates and National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) who have applied to renew certificates. All workshops will be led by Brett DeLoach Vaughn.

Due to the nature of the NB certification process, workshop agendas will focus on topics that candidates will find useful when pursuing National Board Certification. Candidates will also be given time to ask questions and network with other candidates in order to explore challenges of the process with other accomplished teachers.

Brett achieved certification in 2001. She is currently renewing her National Board Certification. She has conducted candidate support workshops and trainings for candidates, District Liaisons and candidate support providers in SC for 9 years. She administered the NB Loan Program at CERRA from August 2007 until she returned to the classroom in August 2009.

  • September 18, 2010- Getting Started: Understanding the Standards, Timelines and Tips. Materials Needed: Copy of standards, portfolio instructions, scoring guide. Registration Deadline: September 10, 2010
  • November 13, 2010- Writing for the portfolio: understanding descriptive, analytical, and reflective writing, documenting accomplishments, and how scoring works. Materials Needed: copy of standards, portfolio instructions, scoring guide. Registration Deadline: November 5, 2010
  • December 4, 2010- Analyzing Student Work. Materials Needed: portfolio instructions, videotaping instructions, scoring guide. Registration Deadline: November 26, 2010
  • January 9, 2011 (retake candidates only)- Understanding the retake process. Materials Needed: candidate score report, portfolio instructions, scoring guide. Registration Deadline: January 5, 2011
  • February 26, 2011- Preparing for Packing: A review of portfolio requirements and tips on packing the box. Materials Needed: portfolio instructions, packing instructions, scoring guide. Registration Deadline: February 19, 2011
  • April 30, 2011- Preparing for the Assessment Center. Materials Needed: assessment center scoring guide, assessment at a glance, standards. Registration Deadline: April 23, 2011

 

The SCEA Sponsored Trainings

The SCEA will offer a series of support sessions for National Board Candidates and renewal sessions for current NBCTs planning to renew their certification.  Open to all candidates, these sessions will offer information and guidance in a format designed to be most useful to the candidates in the process.  Current Board Certified teachers will guide the sessions to insure the most effective use of time and preparation. Registration fee for SCEA members is $20 per session and for non members the fee is $35 per session.

  • December 13, 2010 - Certification Renewal - Advanced Candidacy
  • March 5, 2011 - The Assessment Center - Completing the Process

All sessions will be held from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at The SCEA Headquarters, 421 Zimalcrest Drive in Columbia.
