February 5

The day starts off great.  I received an email from a student that I coached in 1997.  I had not heard from him for years.  It was so uplifting.  He starts off with, “This is G, just to jog your memory, I ….”  It is funny how these emails often start with the thought that I may not remember the student.  Each student leaves a mark on our lives.

I can remember this particular student as a ninth grader with stringy hair that he would pull behind his ears when he was really intense on the field.  I can remember him bent over with his hands clasped, begging to take a penalty kick, “Please coach let me take it, please!”  Yes, I remember him well.

He was effusive with praise which always makes me feel good, but the best part is that he has decided to become a teacher.  He wrote “You are actually an inspiration to me personally as I have decided to get my teaching certification.”  Wow, now that will make your day.

I know he will be well prepared as he added that he is working 50 hours a week, taking 9 credits hours (including Calculus 3), observing a class once a week and has a 3 year old and wife at home.  I think he may well be equipped for the rigors of teaching.

During the cold, rainy, dreary days of winter take time to look back at all the wonderful lives you have touched as a teacher.  It will brighten the darkest day and give you strength for tomorrow.
