February 17
The morning starts with a bustle of activity as we set up and begin decorating. The puzzle pieces are hung around the room as we get set for the first night’s theme. (The making of the puzzle pieces is another story for another time) Small wrinkles develop in the fabric of the day but that is to be expected. We will iron them out and no one will be the wiser.
Additional helpers from CAB and CERRA begin to arrive. They jump right in and things begin to click like a well oiled machine. What a wonderful group of people! Thank you each and every one. Soon the Honor Roll teachers from my class arrive. They will always hold a special place in my heart. I remember when we were named and we did not know each other yet. I imagine now staying in touch with them until the day I shed the mortal coil.
The day passes quickly and the next thing I know I am standing before the registration table. As each District Teacher of the Year arrives it is like greeting old friends. I hope that we have done a job deserving of this fine group of educators.
The evening opens with brief recognition of those attending and then I give a simple introduction of the theme for the evening. The Aynor Pan Jam entertains the gathering while we enjoy a wonderful meal. Then the keynote speaker, Betsy Rogers 2003 National Teacher of the Year, challenges each of us in our role as teacher leaders. She leaves us inspired with a quote from Michael Fullan “In education, moral purpose is about both ends. It is important to make a difference in the lives of students. But the means of getting to that end are also crucial. If you don’t treat others (teachers) well and fairly, you will be a leader without followers.”
Then, once again, midnight passes as we prepare for another day. It was a very good first day.
